Asso.subsea, a specialized global contractor in the submarine cable industry, has signed a contract with NKT, a leading cable manufacturer in the energy sector, for the transportation, installation and burial of a 400 kV DC submarine cable system along a portion of the Hudson River, as a part of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project.

The CHPE project, developed by TDI-USA Holdings LLC, is an innovative, buried renewable power transmission project that will deliver 1250 MW of clean energy from Hydro-Quebec in Canada to New York City. The project will play a key role in New York state’s energy transformation, accelerating progress to achieve New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal to obtain 70 percent of electricity statewide from renewable sources by 2030 on the path to a zero-emission grid.

The Hudson scope of the CHPE project will consist of two bundled HVDC cables laid and buried along a submarine route of more than 85 miles / 140 km which includes shallow water areas, strong currents,  numerous crossings of existing utilities and a variety of riverbed conditions.

Asso.subsea will utilize the full capacity of its  state-of-the-art cable laying fleet, including the DP2 cable laying vessel ‘Atalanti’, specialized in shallow water working environments, the  DP3 cable laying vessel ‘Ariadne’, recently upgraded for the execution of HVDC installation works in addition to the DP2 support vessel ‘Astrea’.

The marine operations are scheduled to commence in Q2 2024 and conclude by Q4 2025.

Mr. Alessandro Panico, Business Development Director of Asso.subsea, commented: “We are glad to support NKT for the CHPE project and be part of this monumental project that will boost the energy transition in New York State. This is a fundamental milestone for Asso.subsea, marking not only the strategic return of our group in the US to provide our contribution for the booming US green economy, but also confirming once again the unrivalled experience in the HVDC bundled installation field as an independent marine contractor”.

Mr. Ulf Andersson, Director Project Procurement of NKT, commented: “We are pleased to enter into this contract with Asso.subsea in the CHPE project and look forward to continue collaborating during the execution phase”
